Why Portugal?
Portugal is one of Europe's oldest countries and simultaneously one of its most compelling travel destinations: a vibrant Lisbon, the soulful city of Porto, ancient wine terraces in the Douro Valley, the endless beaches of the Algarve and the subtropical wildness of Madeira. Few countries offer so many different experiences within such a compact area.
The Portuguese have a word for their particular melancholy: Saudade — a longing for something past that feels intensely present. Anyone who has spent time in Portugal understands it immediately.
Portugal's capital has become one of Europe's most beloved cities. Historic trams, azulejo-tiled facades, sweeping views over the Tagus from its miradouros and a thriving food scene — Lisbon bridges old and new unlike any other European metropolis. Belém, with its tower, the Jerónimos Monastery and the maritime heritage trail, is unmissable.
The Algarve in the south is Portugal's best-known holiday region. Golden limestone cliffs, fine sand beaches and turquoise Atlantic water — the coastline between Sagres and Tavira ranks among Europe's finest. Lagos, Albufeira and Vilamoura are the most developed; head east towards the Spanish border for quieter, more authentic villages.
Porto is Portugal's second city and carries the epithet 'Cidade Invicta' — the Unvanquished City. The riverside Ribeira district is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Douro Valley, an hour to the southeast, is one of the world's most spectacular wine regions: terraced vineyards above the river, historic quintas and the famous port wine lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia.
Madeira sits in the Atlantic 1,000 km southwest of Lisbon and is a natural wonder. Its network of levadas (ancient irrigation channels) provides hundreds of walking routes through laurel forests, gorges and across volcanic ridges. The climate is mild year-round — never too hot, never too cold. For hikers, Madeira is one of Europe's finest destinations.
The most celebrated beaches are in the Algarve: Praia da Marinha (cliffs and sea caves), Praia de Benagil (famous sea cave, accessible by boat), Praia da Falésia (red cliffs, 6 km of sand) and Meia Praia near Lagos (family-friendly, shallow water). Along the Atlantic coast north of Lisbon (Costa de Prata), beaches are broader and wilder — less touristy but with stronger surf.
